The Company
About Workshop Electronics | Group Structure
A Brief History
Workshop Electronics CC was established in March 1985 with two members after Robert Bosch GmbH requested that we take over the countrywide servicing for all Bosch Workshop equipment with their full backing. The two members were Mr. Kapp and Mr. Whiley.
In 1988 we were prompted to look into the designing and building of an advanced electronic brake tester that would comply with S.A.B.S (South African Bureau of Standards) requirements, as well as being competitive with other suppliers of brake testing equipment. In October 1988 we installed our first machine at Pretoria (Tshwane) Municipality Testing Station. This same machine was used by the S.A.B.S to test against CKS 589 - 1983. It was a great success passing the first time.
Workshop Electronics haven’t looked back since. We now have a staff compliment of 16 people and growing.
Looking to the Future
Mr. JJ (Hans) van der Nest now leads the Workshop Electronics team. Sadly both of the founding members passed away shortly after the year 2000. Mr. van der Nest was able to work with these pioneers before they departed. Hans holds various qualifications in the transport field. He has also been involved with accident reduction for the past 25 years and serves on various transport related committees. He is supported by a strong managerial team which include electronic and mechanical engineers.
Over and above brake testing equipment and accessories our area of expertise was extended to the complete accreditation of vehicle test stations. Today, we can design and build your test station, equip it with the most up to date equipment, find and employ staff, do all your accreditation, and even run the testing station for you if you so desire!
Who are Our Clients?
Workshop Electronics is honored to be a part of the futures and successes of our clients. We supply and serve a wide spectrum of clientele however many of our clients are large service providers such as Nissan, McCarthy, Daimler Chrysler, the AA (Test and Drive), Putco and approximately 70% of all Municipalities.
Many of our clients also act as agents on behalf of Government and we have personnel who are fully experienced and qualified with all prescribed legislation. This gives us a distinct advantage over our competitors. We assist our clients with the introduction of quality assurance systems as required by the National Road Traffic Act and SABS 0216. We also walk alongside our clients in the accreditation process and help to ensure that they are promulgated in the Government gazette.
The Latest Technology
Our latest brake tester (Millitron WECC 50) compares to the best available equipment in the world and communicates via a wireless LAN system where Labview software has been integrated reporting the data straight to the wireless device. This saves time and in transport time equals money.
With the new machine we are able to measure and check all brake efficiencies, reaction times of wheels, air pressures, and quality of drums, drag and imbalances between left and right wheels on the same axle. Everything in the new Millitron WECC 50 brake tester is done electronically to reduce the possibility of human error.
We are in the process of adding IDL wireless computers to our devices and have already fitted all the machines with remote controls.
Our machines have been tested against the CKS 589 (SABS prescribed requirements) and passed the first time.
Brake Testers in the Marketplace
We have to date built and installed some 860 brake testers throughout Africa, as well as about the same number of scuff gauges. Also to our name are the installations of over 150 pit jack sets and 122 Axle play detectors. Many other testers have been upgraded from outdated hydraulic testers to more reliable and accurate computerised ones. Take a look below at some of our recently completed projects.
